Comedy & Writing

I write and perform comedy, which usually has something of a musical flavour to it. Click here to see what comedy stuff I've been up to recently.

I recently finished a month's run of my 2011 one-man show Steve Pretty's Perfect Mixtape at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and jolly good fun it was too. If you're into reviews and all that, Whatsonstage called it 'an original delight that put a smile on my face for the rest of the day', the Sunday Express described it as 'mild mayhem', the British Comedy Guide compared me to Bill Bailey and Fest Magazine described it as 'weird'.

I'm performing the show at the Leicester Square Theatre on 1st November 2011 - more info in my newsletter. There will be some other dates around that time, too, all being well.

I am resident music monkey at the excellent fortnightly Alternative Comedy Memorial Society. Look, here I am in September 2011 playing the teapot with a spring onion through some fancy effects pedals:

In 2010 I wrote my debut one man show Steve Pretty on The Origin of the Pieces, which I performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It was really well received, with lots of nice reviews (if you're into that kind of thing) and a great audience response. Fest magazine described it as part of their 'Perfect Fringe Day' and said that it was 'original, intelligent comedy delivered with commendable panache', which was very nice of them.

I performed it again on March 10th and 11th 2011 at the Etcetera Theatre in Camden (Lauren Laverne recommended it on BBC 6Music, which was nice of her) in order to help kick me into shape for writing my new show.

I am also sometime MD and general lackey for Robin Ince, which has meant working with such top folk as Kevin Eldon, Robyn Hitchcock, Stewart Lee, Helen Zaltzman, Rich Sandling, Jo Neary and, of course, Robin himself. This sometimes involves playing teapot, as it does here, with Gavin Osborne, Kevin Eldon and mustachioed opera singer Cat Rogers.

I run an occasional comedy night called the Ludicrumble with the inimitable comedian Caroline Mabey. It is ace and gives me a chance to try out some of my more ridiculous musical and technological inventions such as the patented Heckle-o-meter (TM). The last one involved a paddling pool, Peter Buckley Hill heckling himself with the aid of my machine, and a pass the parcel finale. .

In 2007 I wrote and composed The Big Filling: This Time it's Pie-sonal, an interactive, family-friendly, musical film noir detective story about pies and pastry products - a story as old as time, really. Its Edinburgh Fringe run was a great success, with lots of great reviews including a glowing four star review from The Scotsman which was unfortunately rendered utterly useless by being published after the show had closed, and describing me as 'a talented saxophonist'. There is no greater insult.

You might see me on stage at cult comedy music night Karaoke Circus, for which I play trumpet and sometimes other things.

I also do bits and bobs of other writing, including the odd theatre or music review, and this piece about Gil Scott Heron for Red Pepper Magazine.
